Man survives Oak Lawn shooting incident Police deny knowledge of attempted killing
A young Dallas man who was reportedly shot three times in the head by two black males a block from the corner of Throckmorton and Cedar Springs last Wednesday night, October 7, at about 9:15 P.M. was released Monday from Parkland Hospital, it has been learned.
According to various witness reports, the man was about to enter his automobile when the assailants approached and asked for a light. Not having a match, the victim got into the car to offer the auto's built-in lighter, at which time he was struck in the head, dragged screaming from the car, and shot. His assailants then fled toward Oak Lawn Avenue down the dark side street, Dickason, where the attack took place.
A member of the committee recently formed to organize a plan of counter attack against the rash of anti-gay violence in the Oak Lawn area, who ironically had just stopped for a drink after a meeting of the committee, told the Metro
Times that he heard screams, asked a passer-by to accompany him in case it was a trap, and went to the aid of the victim. He reportedly was a witness to the actual attack and heard several shots.
Patrons and employees of the bars in the immediate area rushed to the aid of the victim, alerting police and ambulance and making the man comfortable as possible while attempting to slow the bleeding.
The Dallas Police Department Media Relations office maintained that they were unable to find any record of a shooting incident on the beat involved in the general time frame that the shooting took place. Metro Times is conducting an investigation to determine if the failure to provide information. is due to incompetency or because of discrimination. The office was responsible in the past for making an effort to deny press credentials. to Contact, another gay publication represented by Metro Times editor Roy Hall.
